About the Role

We're about turning passion into unforgettable experiences. But keeping a global nonprofit running smoothly takes more than enthusiasm. It takes solid financial strategy, transparent stewardship, and proactive oversight. That's where you come in.

Bar Citizen International (BCI) is seeking a Financial Controller to oversee and coordinate the financial health of our growing nonprofit. As a globally distributed organisation still building out its regional and operational frameworks, we're looking for someone ready to shape strong, scalable financial practices from the ground up. Reporting directly to BCI's Board, this role involves managing accounting operations, supporting financial planning and forecasting, and helping ensure compliance with financial standards across multiple jurisdictions.

You'll play a key role in strengthening our ability to:

Maintain accurate and timely financial reporting
Manage global budgets and forecasts aligned with our mission
Ensure responsible stewardship of community-raised funds
Support compliance with charity and financial regulations worldwide

This is a professional volunteer role ideally suited to someone with experience in nonprofit finance, accounting, or audit—particularly in a multi-region or donation-driven environment. You'll be at the heart of a dynamic, international operation that brings fan communities together in meaningful ways.

Be a proud part of the Bar Citizen® initiative, helping bring Star Citizen® fans together in the real world, one unforgettable gathering at a time.

Note: This role requires a meaningful and consistent time commitment, particularly around major events such as CitizenCon and Bar CitizenCon Week, where financial operations may scale significantly.

Responsibilities
- Financial Reporting & Accounting: Oversee day-to-day accounting operations and prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with nonprofit accounting standards.
- Budget Management & Forecasting: Collaborate with Board leadership to build and maintain operational and event-based budgets, and develop financial models to guide decision-making.
- Internal Controls & Compliance: Develop and document internal financial controls while ensuring compliance with financial regulations across relevant jurisdictions.
- Multi-Jurisdictional Compliance: Navigate financial and regulatory requirements across international jurisdictions where events operate.
- Fund Stewardship: Manage allocation and reporting of mission-specific funds, coordinate annual audits, and maintain transparent financial oversight aligned with BCI's mission.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with legal, events, and technology teams to provide financial input and support wider operations.

Requirements

Essential Experience

  • Demonstrated experience in financial management, accounting, or audit roles—preferably in a nonprofit or charity environment operating across multiple jurisdictions.

  • Proven ability to support financial compliance and reporting across different legal and regulatory frameworks with understanding of nonprofit accounting standards.

  • Experience ensuring transparent, ethical, and mission-aligned financial oversight in a nonprofit setting with familiarity in budgeting, forecasting, and financial modelling.

  • Ability to interpret and apply financial compliance standards pragmatically in fast-moving, real-world settings.

  • Excellent attention to detail, documentation, and process improvement skills with ability to operate in a high-trust, decentralised environment.

Desirable Experience

  • Previous experience as a financial controller, treasurer, or finance lead in a 501(c)(3) or equivalent nonprofit structure.

  • Experience supporting financial operations across multiple regions including US, UK, EU, or other international jurisdictions.

  • Familiarity with grant compliance, sponsorship accounting, donor management tools, or financial software such as QuickBooks, Xero, or similar platforms.

  • Formal accounting qualifications (e.g., CPA, CMA, ACCA, or equivalent) are valuable but not required.

  • Previous involvement in event-led, fan-driven, or entertainment-sector nonprofits.
