About the Role

We’re about turning passion into unforgettable experiences. However, bringing fans together across the globe takes more than excitement. It takes smart strategy, steady support, and the resources to make it all happen. That’s where you come in.

Bar Citizen International (BCI) is seeking a Regional Legal Compliance Lead – US & Canada to support our legal, governance, and operational integrity across the region. Reporting directly to BCI’s Chief Legal Officer, this role involves managing compliance risks, supporting contract review processes, and working with senior leadership on governance, regulatory matters, and risk management.

You'll play a critical role in fueling our ability to:

Maintain strong compliance standards across all our operations

Navigate complex regulatory landscapes with confidence

Support our growing community while protecting our organizational integrity

Ensure every event and initiative meets the highest legal and ethical standards

This is a professional volunteer role best suited to someone with a strong background in compliance, governance, or risk management — particularly within charitable, event-led, or non-profit organisations operating across borders. You will be part of a growing global legal and compliance function and help shape responsible, sustainable practices within a passionate community environment.

Be a proud part of the Bar Citizen® initiative, helping bring Star Citizen® fans together in the real world, one unforgettable gathering at a time.

Note: While this is a volunteer role, it does require a meaningful and consistent time commitment — including but not limited to key BCI events such as CitizenCon, Bar CitizenCon Week, and similar events which require additional support.

Responsibilities

Legal & Regulatory Compliance: Monitor and support BCI’s compliance with legal, tax, privacy, and regulatory obligations across the region.

Policy and Governance: Assist in the implementation of organisation-wide policies, adapting them to local legal standards and practical regional needs.

Risk Management: Identify, escalate, and help mitigate legal and reputational risks within the region.

Contracts & Agreements: Draft, review, and support negotiation of legal documents including NDAs, vendor agreements, event waivers, and partnership MOUs.

Events & Public Engagement: Support compliance for in-person and virtual events, including consent, media release, insurance, and local regulatory checks.

Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work with legal, events, HR, finance, and technology leads to maintain high standards of organisational integrity.

Regional Intelligence: Keep BCI informed of relevant changes in law, regulation, or best practice in the region.

Requirements

Essential Experience

Demonstrable experience in legal, regulatory, or compliance-related roles within a non-profit or community-led organisation.

Solid understanding of legal and regulatory governance and risk management in a cross-border or multi-jurisdictional context.

Working knowledge of charitable compliance requirements across the region, including in areas such as data protection, contracts, events, fundraising, and media.

Ability to interpret and apply legal or regulatory frameworks pragmatically in fast-moving, real-world settings.

Comfortable operating in a high-trust, de-centralised environment where authority is shared and accountability is critical.

Desirable Experience

Experience supporting governance and compliance within a 501(c)(3) or equivalent structured non-profit.

Experience collaborating with counterparts in other global regions (e.g., US, UK, EU, APAC).

Formal legal training or relevant qualification.

Previous involvement in event-led, fan-driven, or entertainment-sector non-profits.
